Youngest World Series of Poker Champion

This years WSOP saw the record broke for the youngest World Series of Poker Champion for the second year in a row. Joe Cada, a 21-year-old from Michigan who quit college to play professionally won the World Series of Poker main event in Las Vegas early Tuesday, winning $8.55 million.

There’s a lot of talk across the Internet about how lucky Joe Cada (who has signed on with Poker Stars), and his final opponent Darvin Moon (a 46 year old logger that has never played a game of poker online) even got to be heads up, and I agree that they both diffidently had their share of luck, with Cada hitting some of the most extreme catches I’ve ever heard of.

I saw them both playing cards that I wouldn’t even think of calling with.(Gus Hansen anyone ?) But when you have a tournament of the size of this years WSOP (over 6000 players), I don’t care who you are,you are going to have to have some luck to win.

The final came when Joe Cada turned over a pair of nines with the chip lead after 46-year old Darvin Moon called his all-in with a suited queen-jack, setting up an about even race for most of the chips on the table.

The board came two sevens, a king, an eight and a deuce . Neither player connected with their cards giving 21 year old Joe Cada the win.

That broke the record for the tournament’s youngest winner set last year by Peter Eastgate of Denmark, Cada being 340 days younger.

On that note, I have to say that this years WSOP didn’t do much in my opinion to convince folk that skill will beat out luck in a poker tournament…..it looks like luck prevailed this year.
