What’s Next For South Carolina Gambling ?
Some folk are wondering what’s next for South Carolina gambling laws . Gamblers have gotten the word out about the laws against card and dice games during the two hearings we had during March, 2009, with the media reporting on both of them. The first public hearing was in Charleston, and the second one was held in Greenville.
In Greenville, State Senators heard arguments on both sides of the issue of updating the South Carolina’s 1802 anti-gambling law, with PPA and American Legion members lining up against the Baptist and Bob Jones University over allowing raffles and private poker games.
Now I have nothing at all against religion, but I don’t think religious leaders have any right to dictate whether I can play a game of poker in my own home or buy a raffle ticket to help out some charity cause . I’m a firm believer in separation of church and state when it comes to the law of our lands.
The big question now is, what’s next ? I’m not sure what will be next in our state, but I do know that we as free citizens need to keep trying to get these old laws that have been on the books since 1802 changed.

Folk from here in South Carolina need to keep writing both the House and Senate. And don’t just write one time and let it go. I have written letters to both on a regular basis and encourage everyone to do the same. It’s the only way that I see to keep this fresh on their minds.
Another thing is make sure you join the Poker Players Alliance(PPA). With over a million members, they have a strong voice in both the State and National levels. You can find a lot of available tools at PPA that makes writing your Congressmen and Representatives a very quick and easy experience . Let them all know that we are tired of living with foolish gambling laws dating back to 1802.
You can also find the tools to write the White House and let President Obama know how you feel about the gambling laws. Write them and let the President and his Administration know that we want to repeal the UIGEA that former President Bush made into law.
We as citizens of the State of South Carolina can not afford to sit idly by and let these laws go unopposed.
Editors Note: Poker Players in South Carolina received a bit of good news on May 12, 2009. The Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation that would revise the state’s 207-year-old gambling laws. The next move is for the bills to move to the full Senate.
