S.C. Democrats Plan Gambling Bill
Two South Carolina Democrats plan to introduce a gambling bill this week that would give adults the freedom to play games of chance. State Reps. Boyd Brown, D-Fairfield, and Bakari Sellers, D-Bamberg, have drafted a bill proposing a constitutional amendment which would change the current laws that make games of cards and dice illegal here in the state. The current laws have been on the books since 1802. As silly as it is, that technically means even games like “Go Fish”, “Rummy”, “Monopoly” and “Yahtzee” are all illegal.
The proposed bill would require the approval of the voters, and would allow South Carolina to offer various forms of gambling. By allowing the state to have casinos and gambling it would create possibly thousands of jobs and bring more tourist dollars. It would also bring much needed taxes that could help with infrastructure and even health care costs. The increased revenue it would produce for South Carolina could be used to head off more budget cuts like medicaid, mercy hospice, senior citizen programs and education funds too.
Sadly though some key Republicans who control the S.C. House and Senate, while claiming to believe in less government interference in peoples lives oppose giving citizens the right to gamble. To battle those opponents who do, both Rep. Brown and Rep. Sellers say they hope to form a coalition of like minded Democrats and libertarian Republicans who think that government has no right telling adults what they can or cannot do.
Rep. Brown says the goal is to pass a bill similar to legislation that has passed in Pennsylvania, allowing a county to choose how much – if any – gambling it wants to permit.
