Sen. Ford campaigns for gambling in South Carolina
Democratic Senator Ford of Charleston is running for Governor of South Carolina and is campaigning for gambling changes to be made in the state. State law in South Carolina prohibits games of cards and dice, and even raffles. Sen. Ford has fought against these old laws in the past and has spoken out in defense of home poker players that have been arrested for breaking the laws.
Sadly to say though, he is the only candidate running for the office in both the Democrat and Republican parties that see a need to change these old South Carolina gambling laws. People of South Carolina need to know that according to the way the laws are written, even a game of rummy or monopoly is illegal !
Sen. Ford says that by changing the laws and legalizing gambling it will bring much needed revenue to the state. Two of his proposals would be to bring back video poker and to sell Myrtle Beach a casino license. Personally I feel that a casino would go over very well at Myrtle Beach. Maybe out by the Myrtle Beach Convention Center where a large expanse of land is empty at where the old Myrtle Beach Mall was torn down. Both of these would not only raise a lot of money, $2 billion in the next year by some statistics, but would bring possibly thousands of jobs that South Carolina so desperately needs.

I know that a lot of people in this bible belt state will fight this to their last breath, but I say bring on the changes. We do not need the government, Federal or State, babysitting us and telling us what we can and can’t do with our own hard earned money. Gambling is not forced on no one, and if a person does not like it they should be mature and responsible enough on their own not to visit places of business that have it. I sure don’t need the government telling me what I can play in my own home. And this state needs the money!
I don’t think Sen. Ford really stands much of a chance at becoming Governor of South Carolina, but I do respect the man for wanting to change these old laws and letting what is supposed to be a free people make their own decisions about whether they gamble or not without the fear of being locked up. These laws were put in place in 1802 while Thomas Jefferson was President of the United States and it is past time for South Carolina to start living in the present, not in the past!
If you believe that this is a free country and that people have the right to spend their money without the government telling them how to, make sure you let your politicians know where you stand. Be sure to vote in elections, nothing can be changed by sitting at home and just ignoring the situation folk. And get all the facts on what candidates are standing for before election day, not just the propaganda that you might hear from just certain sources.
