SC. Republicans fight against gambling

The Poker Players Alliance has been at work in South Carolina to help with getting the outdated South Carolina gambling laws in the state changed. From all responses I have received from the states politicians, in large part the Republican party in South Carolina believes that the American public has no right to gamble. Senator DeMint (R-SC), Senator Graham (R-SC), and Congressman Brown (R-SC) have all voiced their opposition to gambling, and the rights of citizens to gamble or play poker in the privacy of their own homes. They have shown this by supporting the UIGEA bill that former President Bush (R) signed into law in 2006 making transactions to online gambling sites illegal. (The UIGEA has gone into full effect today (June 1st) after Democrats and others were unable to get another extension on the bill)

Also today, June 1st, in the Republican debates for Governor of South Carolina WBTW TV asked a question to all four candidates by me; “Where does one stand on the old outdated gambling laws of the state that date back to 1802 and outlaws all games of cards and dice, and would they be for repealing them to make gambling legal,  creating much needed  jobs and taxes for the state?”

Each Republican candidate for Governor of South Carolina,  McMaster, Bauer, Barret and Haley each answered an resounding no.

What happened to the Republican party being the party of less Government? The party has shown that this is not the case. They choose to be a moral police force that tells citizens what they can and cannot do not only with their own money, but also what they can do in the privacy of their own homes by telling the people that they can not spend their own money in any games of chance or poker.

The latest Newsletter from the PPA was sent out yesterday and has an update on where South Carolina stands at the moment on getting these old out dated laws changed; The PPA worked closely with our allies in the state House of Representatives to pass H.4267, a bill which would make social gambling and raffles legal in South Carolina. H.4267 passed out of subcommittee after compelling testimony from John Pappas, Executive Director of the PPA, and other PPA supporters of the bill.

H.4267 was sent to the full House Ways and Means Committee, but due to the limited time left in the legislative session and the legislature’s need to focus on the budget, the House decided to table the bill until next legislative session.

Readers that believe in our freedoms and do not want the government dictating what games they can or cannot play can contact their politicians by simply clicking here. It only takes a minute of your time.
