Reply from Sen. DeMint on the UIGEA
As the regular readers of CarolinaGambler.com know, it was just a short time ago that I posted a letter from the Poker Players Alliance encouraging folk to write your Governor and Lawmakers. Well I would never ask others to do what I’m not willing to do myself and I’ve received a reply back from Sen. DeMint’s office about the UIGEA matters. I’ve recieved them in the past from the Republican Senator here in South Carolina, but here is the latest one:
Dear Earl,
Thank you for contacting me to express your support for legislation to amend the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) to exclude regulation of online poker.
As you may know, the UIGEA was passed as part of the SAFE Port Act of 2006 and regulates numerous forms of online gaming and gambling. Regulations included in the law affect the way banks may conduct business with consumers participating in online games such as poker. While certain aspects of the UIGEA have been challenged in court cases around the country, the law continues to mandate guidelines by which online poker players must abide.
On August 6, 2009, Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey introduced S.1597, a bill to amend United States Code relating to licensing of internet poker and other predominantly skill games, to provide for consumer protections, and enforce the tax code. This legislation would redefine the manner in which the Secretary of the Treasury regulates skill games such as poker and allow for more open access to online poker for players across the country.
Presently, this legislation has been referred to the Senate Committee on Finance. While I am not a member of this Committee, please rest assured that should this bill come before the full Senate for debate, I will keep your thoughts in mind.
Thank you again for sharing your views with me. Please feel free to contact me in the future about any issue important to you or your family. It is an honor to serve you and the people of South Carolina.
Sincerely,
Jim DeMint
United States Senator
Sen. DeMint’s stance on my freedoms to play online poker , and his support of the South Carolina Constitution that forbids games of cards and dice is the reason he could never receive my vote. I do not need elected officials telling me how I can spend my own hard earned money. Less Government ? Sounds more like a nanny state to me.
