Poker Playing Priest Wins $100k
Yesterday was the airing of “PokerStars.net Million Dollar Challenge” on Fox network. It came on right after the football game and the first show was all about the local poker playing Catholic Priest, the Rev. Andrew Trapp of Garden City Beach here in South Carolina.
Right after a friend (WidmanSC over at the forum) and I watched the Carolina Panthers squeeze out a win over the Washington Redskins, we decided to watch the show and see how the local Priest done.
The first segment of the show had him playing against former basketball pro John Sully with Daniel Negreanu giving Trapp advice on how to play against him. Sully played pretty aggressive against the Priest and had him beat in one hand for all of Trapps chips until a spade gave the local Priest the flush and turned the tide for him. He soon went on to beat Sully with a boat, Aces over, when Sully tried to make a bluff for the pot.
The second segment saw Priest Trapp go head to head against lady poker pro Vanessa “Lady Maverick” Rousso for a $25,000 prize. Again he had some coaching advice from Daniel Negreanu, and again he got a bit of luck when he needed it most to stay alive when all his chips were in the pot. Vanessa had flopped a straight and Trapp had high pair and committed all his chips. The river card gave them both an eight high straight and they split the pot to keep the Priest alive. He soon went on to beat the “Lady Maverick” in the match and won the 25k .
Next he was offered the opportunity to play Daniel Negreanu for a cool 100k and he accepted the offer.
This time the Priest was on his own and he made short work of poker pro Negreanu at the felt. A couple hands into the heads up match and Daniel Negreanu was dealt a 5-6 and Andrew Trapp was dealt j-8. The flop came eight, four two giving Trapp high pair and Negreanu the straight draw.
Negreanu bet and Trapp raised with all his chips. With Negreanu needing a three or seven he made the call. Daniel Negreanu said he felt he would catch the needed card to win the hand but the last two shared cards came up a jack and a two, giving Trapp the two pair and the winning hand, and the win.
In December, Trapp will join three other people who also won $100,000 each for a chance to go for $1 million. Regardless of what plays out though, Trapp says that St. Michael Catholic Church will get the $100,000.
