Poker Bill Advances in South Carolina

South Carolina Senators have finally endorsed a bill that would allow people to have a legal game of poker in their homes. The vote came on Tuesday (1-25-11) and was 15 for and 6 against changing the current law that has been on the books since 1802. I find it appalling that we still have politicians screaming that we need less government control yet still believe that we need laws telling adults what they can and can’t play in their own home .

As regular readers at Carolina Gambler know, all games of cards and dice and even raffles at the moment are illegal in the state. That means that technically those that play games such as Monopoly, Rummy and even Yahtzee are breaking the law in South Carolina. Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell (R) said legislators will still need to define and regulate gambling before the state Supreme Court makes a rule on the legality of poker.

Republican Senator from Murrells Inlet, SC. Ray Cleary, chastised other Republicans for railing against the so-called “nanny state” when it comes to federal health care, but then they turn right around and oppose an in home social gambling bill.

“I see throughout Senate chambers the flags that say ‘Don’t Tread on Me,’” he said of the miniature flags on many Republicans’ desks. “You say our Founding Fathers didn’t want so much government intrusion into personal lives. Yet, you’re the same group who wants to regulate what people do in their own homes.”

I wholeheartedly agree Sen. Cleary. It is beyond time for the hypocrites in our society to stop telling responsible adults how they entertain themselves while in the privacy of their own homes.
