Poker, Beer and Fighting
We’ve all heard the stories of how poker and too much alcohol can lead to fighting. That’s rarely happened at any of the poker games I’ve sat down at, but it can. Maybe it was because most of the folk I’ve sat at the table with have been much older and their fighting days were over. There was this one incident that I will never forget though……
Several years ago at one of our Friday night poker games one of the fellers decided to invite an acquaintance of his over. Now we didn’t invite folk over too often to the “old Tom House”, but when someone did our little group did our best to make them feel welcome. We’d share our beer, and in return we’d try to take their money at the table.
This particular invitee weren’t none to good at poker, and it weren’t too long before he started losing his money. And the more money he was losing, the more beer he was a drinking. Maybe it was the booze, but before long he went to running his mouth off and after while he was asked to leave. That was when the trouble started…..
At the time I was 40 or so, and this feller was late 40′s. Now bare in mind everyone else was 60 and above. As I’ve said, most their fighting days was done and over with, and when they asked you to leave, you just up and left.
Mr. invitee decides he’s gonna make a fuss though on his way out and goes to push the table over when he stands but falls flat on his ass instead. And being the gentleman I am I decide to help the feller back to his feet. When I reached down with my left hand to get hold of him, the fool latched on to my fingers with his teeth !
Now I don’t know if any of you readers have ever had a grown man bite you, but I can tell you that it’s a hurtin thing. My answer to this, after I let out a string of words that I wouldn’t let my wife hear, was to go to pounding on his head with my right fist. After several blows he finally let go and was out like a bad light bulb. A couple of us guys then threw him in the bed of his truck and took him back home to his wife. (needless to say he never was invited back)
It was quite a spell before we had any trouble after that…and it was a good thing too. It took quite the spell for my fingers to heal………
