Playing Poker Online
Playing poker online is different than playing live in many ways. The most obvious one is instead of having the opponents staring at you from across the table at a casino or some club you are staring at avatars on your monitor from the comfort of your own home, but the same basic strategies still apply for both versions.
If you are a new poker player don’t expect to start off as a winning player at online poker, there’s millions of dollars won and lost everyday by folk playing poker online. I do think though that there are more options to become a better player online and even build a bankroll for folk that are willing to learn. Playing the freeroll tournaments is one fine example, and most all online poker rooms have them. I got my start online with just a few cents in the very early days at PDC Poker around 2005 that I had won in a freeroll. And if an old country boy from down South like me can do it, I’m sure most anyone can. The freerolls give you the chance to win without risking any money at all, so this is always a perfect place for the beginner to start.
Always be smart and play within your bankroll, never above it ! If you have only a 100 bucks or so to deposit and start playing with, the Carolina Gambler and most any experienced online poker players will recommend you stick with the lower stake tables and tournaments for a while. Then as your bankroll increases you will naturally be learning as you go, then you can gradually move up to play higher stakes. A rule to try and remember is to never enter a poker table or tournament that is more than a tenth of your bankroll.
Most online poker rooms give you the chance to take and save notes on the other opponents at the tables. Use this to your advantage ! Taking notes on players allows you to quickly examine a situation the next time you meet them in a hand.
Never allow yourself to get to that point where you think you know everything about the game of poker. If you do, walk away from the game and take time off before your “ego” leads to the demise of your bankroll ! Just as it goes with living life, poker is a never ending game to learn. As poker gets more main stream in the world each day and new players come to the game, the different styles of play from folks will always stop the game from becoming boring.
So till next time folk, good luck at the felt and never bet more than you can afford !
