Only 150 to go!!
So with 150+ games left on our fantasy schedules, it is certainly not panic time yet…BUT… what to make of the early season numbers? I mean is it OK for a guy to have a slow start, or be in a slump early? Should we be dumping top notch guys for a flash in the pan upstart? This depends on the player and the track record.
I would not be in favor of dropping David Ortiz. Even with the early disappointing numbers (6/35,.171 avg, 0 hr, 2 rbi), it would be a monumental mistake in my opinion to give up on the Boston slugger. It would be unrealistic to think he will not put up 30 dingers and 100+ driven in. Hold on to him, take some early lumps, and reap the rewards later.
Also in Boston, JD Drew is off to an awful start. Francona will be moving Drew to the number 2 slot in the lineup, putting him in front of Pedroia. This should get JD some better pitches to hit, and snap him out of his early slump (.132, 4 R, 2 RBI, 1 HR). If Francona has faith in Drew, thats good enough for me. Keep him on your roster, maybe a little riding the pine time until he warms up.
The New York Mets certainly have their hands full with Jose Reyes. Jose always drafts high in the fantasy leagues, but has yet to get on track this season (.154, 1 steal, 2 scored) My feeling is if an advantageous trade offer for Reyes comes your way, I would put him on the block. I have little faith that Manuel can motivate him, and given his track record of injuries, It may be wise to acquire a steadier number producer.
On the other end of the spectrum we have Scott Podsednik. The Royals outfielder is red hot currently (.457, 7 SB, 6 RBI, 5 R), I like this production but wish he was on a better team. I noticed this morning that percentage of ownership is 59%, up 51 points!! So, if you have any interest in him, check your waiver wire and move quickly.
Likewise, Placido Polanco is off to a fantastic start. (.396, 2HR, 12 RBI, .404 OBP) Polanco is most likely only accessible by trade as ownership percentage on the ESPN site is at 100. Be prepared to pay dearly in a trade for him, as fantasy managers will be resistant to transactions including this producer.
A tip of the cap to Ubaldo Jimenez for pitching the first no hitter in Colorado Rockies history!! ( assisted by a defensive gem from speedster Dexter Fowler).
Hope you all had a great fantasy week, my numbers down head to head (4-6-0) and in roto (58.5),, ugh, I am off to get some pitching, so wishing you high scoring, good luck, and most of all have fun!!
