Online Poker Bill Introduced

Rep. John Campbell (R-Calif) has introduced a bill that would establish federal licensing and regulation of online wagering, specifically online poker. HR 1174, or The Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act, is the same as one that passed in the House Financial Services Committee by a vote of 41-22-1 in July of 2010. The bill’s initial cosponsors include Representatives Barney Frank (D-MA), Peter King (R-NY) and Ed Perlmutter (D-CO) and has been referred to the House Financial Services Committee.

Longtime advocate for online gambling, Congressman Frank states that this bill “would establish a federal regulatory and enforcement framework under which Internet gambling operators could obtain licenses authorizing them to accept bets and wagers from individuals in the United States.”

Along with processes to prevent tax avoidance, the measure would also set requirements for operators to set daily, weekly or monthly limits on deposits and losses to detect individuals who may have excessive gaming habits. If passed the bill would become law 90 days after regulations are issued.

Poker Player Alliance Chairman, the former Sen. Alfonse D’Amato (R-N.Y.) says “Given that millions of Americans currently play online poker, states across the country are recognizing the value in licensing and regulating the game and many are introducing their own laws … while collecting millions in tax revenue.”

Hopefully with so many of the newly elected being of the internet age something will soon get passed that will repeal the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) and give adults here in the United States the freedom to fund all online games, including poker.

The Poker Players Alliance has an Action Center where readers can check to see if their member of Congress is on the Financial Committee and to tell them to support HR 1174. It only takes a few seconds to do and can be found by clicking here.
