North Carolina Sports Update

Hi NC Sports Fans!

So, several weeks have passed again since my last post, and I continue to apologize. There is just so much to keep up with these days. And unfortunately, the bad news continues as overall, NC sports teams struggle.

College basketball is in full swing. It doesn’t look like a championship year anywhere on or near tobacco road, but there are still a lot of good teams. Carolina and Duke are power teams as always – but have a lot of improvements to make. But there are other teams – like NC State and Wake Forest in the ACC. Charlotte in the A10 looks pretty good again this year. Keep an eye on Western Carolina too – their only loss is to Texas – and they’ve beaten several big east teams. We’ll see if any other teams come out of the woodwork as conference season gets underway.

The Charlotte Bobcats over in the NBA are improving, but just cant get over that hump for their first playoff berth. The Bobcats are 9-11 at home – but their 1-11 road record 8.5 games behind Orlando. Believe it or not, if the season ended today, that record is good enough for the 8th and final playoff spot in the East.
The Hurricanes…

The ‘Canes are a mess. They have injury and age problems. They just can’t find a way to win games. I dont see how a team is so powerful one year – making it to the East Finals… Then the following year – largely with the same players – are dead last in the NHL… And it’s not even close. The Canes have 22 points – next worst is Toronto with 31 points. And while I complained about the Bobcats on the road, the Canes just got their first road win. They have 16 road losses (including 4 in overtime or shootout)

More bad news? The NFL’s Panthers made news this week complaining Randy Moss quit. Yet the Patriots still doubled up the lackluster offense, winning 20-10. So, they aren’t out of the playoff picture, but at 5-8, they need considerable help to have any chance. And did I mention they play the Vikings, Giants, and Saints in their last 3 games? Can we please draft a quarterback? And I’ll start the rumors: Bill Cowher, former Steelers coach, loves North Carolina… Fox should be fired after this season – I wonder if he would return to coaching for the opportunity to stay close to home. I can’t get credit for starting the rumor – but it definitely makes sense… It’s a good fit, but it all depends if coaching is still in his heart.

Until next week, North Carolina!
