WORLD CUP 2010 – QUARTER FINALS
MIKE’S WORLD CUP 2010 – the QUARTER FINALS
Well, let’s start by congratulating the final 8 teams left in the 2010 World Cup.
The Quarter Final line up looks like this:
Netherlands v Brazil
Uruguay v Ghana
Argentina v Germany
Paraguay v Spain
So there are 4 South American nations, 3 European nations and 1 African nation.
I have decided use some science in my new predictions as my ‘gut feeling’ has so far been woefully inaccurate. Let’s have a look at some figures – goals scored and conceded.
Whilst this is not a recognised method of identifying form, it does highlight a team’s goal activity, tactics and desire, all of which are needed to win the competition.
Team Goals Scored Goals Conceded
Netherlands 7 2
Brazil 8 2
Uruguay 6 1
Ghana 4 3
Argentina 10 2
Germany 9 2
Paraguay 3 1
Spain 5 2
Some amazing figures:
Ghana have scored only 4 and conceded 3 yet they have reached the last 8.
Paraguay have reached the last 8 and have only scored 3 times.
Argentina are the only side to have hit double figures in the goals scored column.
Uruguay and Paraguay have only conceded one goal each.
Based on the above, the Netherlands v Brazil match looks a cliff hanger and could go either way. I fancy the Brazilians, however, who look so cool and composed.
Uruguay seem likely to progress against Ghana who have performed so well to get this far (based on their goal statistics) – I think that will happen.
Argentina v Germany looks another cliff hanger. However, my gut feel (oh no – here we go again) senses a weakness in the Argie back four which Germany may be able to exploit. I am going to have to stick my next out and go for the young German side.
Despite their lack of goals conceded, Paraguay do not score often enough for this stage of the competition and the Spanish are starting to look like a side coming back into form so my selection is Spain.
Remember, I did advise Spanish supporters not to panic when they lost the first match.
If I am right, this makes the Semi Finals:
Brazil v Uruguay
Germany v Spain
This would guarantee a South America v Europe final.
After a mixture of form analysis and my gut feel, my World Cup Final selection is Brazil v Germany.
I’ll explain why I feel that way after the Quarter Finals stages, assuming these two teams progress, and I will also clarify why I think Brazil will take the ultimate crown.
There is a lot of football to be played yet, however, and my earlier forecasts have often been proven completely wrong by subsequent results so don’t put all your money on it!
