MIKE’S WORLD CUP 2010
MIKE’S WORLD CUP 2010 – the knock out stages
Hurray – the Knock Outs are here and I hope we will see the standard of football improve as teams now have to play to win. I expect to have nightmares for a long time having watched both the England v Algeria and the Brazil v Portugal games!
And some of the smaller football nations have done extremely well. Congratulations to Japan, Slovakia and South Korea in particular for top performances.
My score predictions (and reasons) for the upcoming games are shown below. Please don’t be offended if I have voted against your team – I am sure I will get most of the results wrong anyway and you can always berate me afterwards for my stupidity.
Uruguay 1-2 South Korea. Although the former will be favourites and look the stronger side, I just have a hunch that the Koreans will win this one. There is no sane reason for this prediction other than a gut feel. I must be going mad.
USA 2 – 0 Ghana. I have been impressed by the fighting spirit of the USA team and unimpressed by the relatively poor form of the African nations generally. I fancy the Yanks to go through with relative ease.
Germany 1 – 1 England. A tough one for me to predict for many reasons. The Germans have a flowing young side and England play in fits and starts – but this game is different because of the long footballing rivalry between the teams. Form goes out of the window and I’m going for a draw with (wait for it) England winning the penalty shoot out!
Argentina 2 – 2 Mexico. (Argies to win on penalties) This is the game of the round for me (excluding the England/Germany clash of course!) and I think it could go to a penalty shootout. Of course, the Argentines are stunning going forward but their defence looks vulnerable and Mexico start and finish their games like dervishes. This could be a classic.
Netherlands 3 – 1 Slovakia. A victory for the Dutch but I might eat my words if the Slovakians score first. The Dutch have been known to crumble under pressure but I think they will control the game from the off and come out as victors. They should do.
Brazil 2 – 0 Chile. I think Brazil will have too much fire power for the Chileans who have done well to progress this far. Brazil should go through comfortably.
Paraguay 0 – 2 Japan. The Japanese seem to be improving after sluggish pre and early tournament matches and I really fancy them to go through. They will be the underdogs but they have great spirit, have started to score goals from set pieces and may be on a roll.
Spain 1 – 0 Portugal. Another cracking tie with Spain just shading it for me – but it will be hard fought, very close and may go the other way.
OK – I have put my neck on the block and will probably land up looking daft. Now tell me what you think (please post BEFORE each game if you are forecasting the result!).
I’ll be back as the week progresses for a review of events.

I hope you are right about Team USA Mike. Their slow starts worry me though. Good luck to your team too. I don’t think England wanted Germany?
My predictions:
Uruguay 1 – 1 South Korea
SK on penalties
USA 1 – 0 Ghana
Germany 1 – 2 England
(more hope than belief)
Argentina 3 – 1 Mexico
Holland 2 – 0 Slovakia
Brasil 2 – 1 Chile
Paraguay 1 – 2 Japan
Spain 1 – 1 Portugal
Spain on Penalties
Wow – I think I am a jinx.
S Korea should have scored several times but lost and the USA looked so nervous. First time they haven’t really believed in themselves.
Bad forecasting so far – let’s hope I improve.
England need Wright-Philips What do you think Mike
Was an exciting time for Team USA and the fans. Ghana took our boys to school yet again. USA 1 – Ghana 2 .
I had the feeling that those early scores against USA were going to soon be their downfall.
Good luck to England tomorrow Mike.
Bad luck Carolina Gambler and the USA Team – you gave us some good memories and I think you might have gone further if the team had relaxed a bit more.
Statistically, the USA have never won a game having reached the KO stages but I felt they might do it this time.
For punters, one idea might be to consider my winning forecasts and then bet on the other team – at least if the first two games are anything to go by!
Wow. 4-1 Germany. I thought it would be a close game, but Germany put on a heck of a performance in beating England.
Bob – you know what I think.
Perhaps you should declare your interest as a relative of the said player?
what do you think about bringing hawk eye in for disallowed goals.I must say i am not related to wright-philips.Holland to beat Brazil 2 1 how about that mike
My mistake – but you are one of his top admirers!
Hawkeye is a form of technology used mainly in cricket to check referee/umpire decisions for those who don’t know.
I think video replays or something like Hawkeye could be used in big tournies but FIFA seem dead against it.
I’ll post my forecasts for the last 8 when the rest of the ties complete later today.
