Men Appeal Gambling Laws in S.C.
According to my local paper yesterday, the five men that were arrested in a 2006 raid on a poker game are seeking to make Texas Hold’em legal in South Carolina.
The poker players attorney said the men hope that their appeals will highlight problems with an old 1802 law that outlaws any game with cards or dice. As I reported on before, a Mount Pleasant judge had agreed with the men that Hold’em is a game based on skill, but due to current state laws he had still found the five guilty of operating an illegal gambling house and fined each of them $262.
I’m sure the Poker Players Alliance will help with these appeals as they have done during the previous trails and I wish them all the best of luck. Hopefully it will reach the State Supreme Courts and the 1802 laws on gaming will be abolished as they should be.
“It’s becoming quite clear the legal community agrees that this great American pastime is a game of predominant skill, not luck, and should not be considered gambling under the law,” commented John Pappas, executive director of the Poker Players Alliance.
In the meantime you can find me playing in the Charity Poker Event this weekend at Carbon Poker.
