“Its tough to make predictions, especially about the future” – Yogi Berra
The wise words of the ever so eloquent immortal Yankee, Yogi Berra!! But unfortunately this is exactly what we need to do in our fantasy leagues, so against Yogi’s sound advice we forge ahead into prognosticating and speculating on our studs and duds!
On the studs list we find Ichiro Suzuki (OF SEAMAR) hitting .351 with 10 swiped, Suzuki again proves to be solid in the fantasy world. While the power numbers are ( and will never be) spectacular, you can always count on the speed and tenacity of Ichiro. One of his greatest assets in my opinion is his ability to stay injury free, and as we all know, once your top avg/scored/stolen guy goes DL, it is nearly impossible to fill the void off the wire, or find a sympathetic fantasy manager willing to trade you anyone of quality mid season with out giving up half your roster!
How about Evan Longoria (3B TBRAYS)? Here’s a player in just his 3rd year, but you would never know it by his poise and confidence at the plate. After an impressive 09 season (.281/33 hr/113 rbi), Longoria continues to impress. So far this season hitting .317/9/33, and playing for the best team in baseball, Evan has a bright future in major league baseball and fantasy lineups!!
Ty Wiggington (1B,2B,3B BALTOR) is showing some early season life. Not familiar with that name? Not surprising, in his 9th season of MLB service Wigs finds himself on his 5th team. A career .273 hitter, Ty is currently 48 points above that mark. Coming off an unimpressive 09 season that featured just 11 HR and 24 driven, Wiggy has already passed that HR total with 12, and already has driven in 24. This looks to be a career season for him. His future? I’m sorry to say, in my opinion, not as bright as some of the others. I really like Wiggy this season tho. His versatility as a bench player in your line up makes for easy transition on off days, or if you have an infielder go down. The downside is obviously, I wish he was on a better team.
Under the duds category we find Aramis Ramirez ( 3B CHICUB). Batting a paltry .167, 3 HR, and 17 RBI, Its time to send Aramis to the wire. With offensive numbers on the downward spiral since his 2006 season, I think its safe to say, the future is looking a little bleak for the Chicago third baseman.
Another 2010 dud in my opinion is Chone Figgins (2B,3B SEAMAR). After posting a 2009 season with 42 steals and a .298 avg, this year pales in comparison. Thus far hitting .187 with 8 steals, I have dropped him off my roto team and advise any Figgins owners to do the same. It is unfortunate, but I believe 2009 may have been the best season of his career.
Hope you all scored well in your leagues, I was fortunate enough on Sunday to overcome a pitching deficit and squeak out a 5-4-1 win h2h. Roto leagues I held steady at 80.5 (yahoo) and 73.5 (ESPN) both good enough to maintain second place.
Don’t know how good my fortune telling skills are, only time will tell, but as Yogi once said “When you see a fork in the road, take it” Best of luck for monster scoring this week, and most importantly, have fun!!
