Henry E. Brown Responds to UIGEA
I received a letter back from Congressman Henry Brown (R-SC)today to the letter that was sent off to the lawmakers of my state by way of the Poker Players Alliance (PPA). I thought readers of Carolina Gambler may be interested in what he has to say about the UIGEA and where he now stands on legislation that has recently been introduced to remove the 2006 law that former President Bush signed into law.
Dear Mr. Moore:
Thank you for contacting me regarding online poker and wagering. I understand your views on this subject, but I have serious concern for the risks that come with gambling, especially since the advent of online gambling. While we may disagree on this issue, please know that I appreciate hearing your thoughts and welcome every opportunity to be of service.
In 2006, Congress passed, and I supported, legislation that made online wagering illegal, and in doing so, cut off the flow of revenue to unlawful Internet gambling businesses. I believe today, as I did then, that government should not support online gambling. Americans lost nearly $91 billion on all forms of gambling. According to the National Gambling Impact Study Commission and addiction counselors, 15 million to 20 million U.S. adults and adolescents have either problem or pathological gambling addictions. Legislation has recently been introduced that would gut the 2006 law and allow the Department of the Treasury to regulate online gambling. I will continue to oppose these efforts should this legislation come for a vote before the full House.
While we may not see eye-to-eye on this issue, please know that I value your input. As Congress continues to consider important legislation, please sign-up for e-mail updates from my office at http://brown.house.gov/updates.
Sincerely,
Henry E. Brown, Jr.
Member of Congress
I’ve never voted for Mr. Brown in the past, and would never vote for the man in the future and will always encourage my readers to do the same.
What ever happened to the Republican party being the party of less government ? This letter alone proves that this is not the case…..the Republican party has tried to babysit adults since 2006 and tell them what they can and can’t do in the privacy of their own homes.
Mr. Brown, it is the likes of you and former President Bush that has turned me against the Republican Party, for you have shown how hypocritical the party really is. All this while trying to convince the American public that it is the Democrats that are trying to enter folks home and control their lives…..
