Friday Night Poker in Carolina
Today I’m sitting here in front of this monitor and can’t hardly think of a thing to write about. My mind just keeps wandering back to some of the good times from days past. Especially the Friday night poker games I use to play in at what we folk called the “Tom House”. We called the old farm house (looked sorta like the one in the picture) by that name because after 6pm no ladies were allowed, just us “old Tom’s” (for those that don’t know, that’s what a male turkey is called). I was the young kid in the crowd being in my 30′s through early 40′s at the time, most everyone else was done retired from farming or some other job.
Anyhow, each Friday afternoon bout six or seven of us guys would meet at the Tom House and we’d sit round cuttin the fool and talking bout the latest happenings while cooking up some steaks or the likes over a fire. A couple of us would bring our guitars and even play a tune or two. After we all ate and got our talking out the way was when we’d settle down for some Friday night poker.
Back then we didn’t play no Texas Hold’em, fact be known I don’t think most of the old timers had even heard of it round these parts and we sure didn’t know nothin about playing any online poker. Our poker was stud or draw, and man could them fellers take you to school on them games. We didn’t play for no real big stakes, most nights my bankroll wouldn’t be but $100 or so, but these games could go on for hours. Did I ever come out ahead ? Nope, them old boys just took me to school each week but it sure was fun.
The one thing that I really liked about the old Tom House days is we never had any trouble even with all the booze we drank cept for just one incident (but that’s a story for another week). A lot of that I’m sure was due to everyones age for one thing, but also no one was welcomed without an invite from the owner of the old farm house. We were a right tight group of friends just enjoying some Friday night poker in Carolina..
I sure miss them old fellers………
