Congressman Frank and the UIGEA
Like him or not, Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA) has been one of, if not the biggest supporter online poker players have had in politics. He has been a staunch opponent of the UIGEA since former President Bush signed it into law in October of 2006 and has repeatedly proposed legislation in the hopes of righting the wrongs of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).
Soon after President Barack Obama and the new administration took office, as Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Congressman Frank began the 2009 session with a news conference and interviews where he discussed the issues that would be on the agenda. He told the Financial Times that he planned to propose yet another online gaming legislation that would allow people to play poker online.
Congressman Frank has stated that he plans to introduce the Internet gambling legislation soon after the Easter recess. Frank told the Washington, D.C. publication The Hill that, “I want to do this with hearings, discussions, and votes.” Hopefully this will be the bill that will finally regulate online gaming.
Some folk think that the UIGEA made online gambling and poker illegal, but that is far from being the case. What the law did was ban transfers from financial institutions to online gambling sites. This has made it difficult for some folk to deposit or with draw from a lot of gaming sites, but there are still ways to finace your play if you just dig deep enough. Some studies have shown that if online gambling and poker were regulated and taxed that it could bring in upwards of 52 billion dollars in the next decade . With the National deficit what it is today, and just continually growing, this could be a good source of income for the United States.
Anyhow,I thank Congressman Frank for all his efforts on behalf of the online player and I wish him all the best in getting the Internet gambling legislation passed . I also thank the Poker Players Alliance for all they do and encourage folk to join them.
