Carolina Baseball is Here
Summer is here – and that is a slow time for North Carolina. There is a wealth of minor league teams – we’ve listed quite a few below – If you haven’t already – consider going to a game. They make great family events at a reasonable price.
See tomorrow’s stars today.
- Durham Bulls
- Carolina Mudcats (Zebulon, NC)
- Kinston Indians
- Winston-Salem Dash
- Asheville Tourists
- Greensboro Grasshoppers
- Hickory Crawdads
- Kannapolis Intimidators
- Burlington Royals
- Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Myrtle Beach, SC)
Unfortunately, the nearest pro teams are in Atlanta and Baltimore. There are various college baseball teams across the state as well, highlighted by the Carolina Tar Heels, a perennial contender.
There are two big stories in the past couple weeks…
Carolina Hurricanes to host NHL All-Star Game
It was announced on April 8 that the NHL All Star Game would be held in Raleigh, NC. The game is January 30. I’m not sure if the average guy is going to be able to buy a ticket (currently you can only be promised a ticket if you are a season ticket holder) but still this is a huge exposure and economic stimulus for sports in the state.
Carolina Panthers draft Jimmy Clausen
The pundits are praising the move – indicating the Panthers were lucky to draft him with the 48th pick. He should be ready for NFL snaps this season – something the Panthers could have used a year ago. Delhomme is gone now – and Matt Moore deserves to start. Is Moore the kind of quarterback who can deal with the pressure of having a rookie waiting for his job?
Carolina also picked up a couple WR in the 3rd round from LSU and App St (Brandon LaFell and Armanti Edwards, respectively). Edwards actually played QB at App St (a college in the North Carolina mountains). Then they got Eric Norwood from South Carolina – an outside linebacker in the 4th round.
Other Happenings:
The Bobcats did indeed make the playoffs, but as of this writing are close to getting swept out – down 3-0 versus the Magic. But just making the playoffs is an important first step for the franchise.

I think we all can agree that Matt Moore deserves the start for the Panthers.
