Can the Panthers have a winning season?

Hello North Carolina Sports Fans – We have a very busy week here in North Carolina.

Of course, the week must start by looking at the Carolina Panthers. Football season opened last night ith a great game as the Steelers knocked off the Titans in overtime. Carolina has a tough time in store Sunday (1pm) as they take on the Philadelphia Eagles. The good news: Michael Vick is out for the first two games as the NFL imposes their own discipline for the dog fighting. But Philly is a strong team regardless and the Panthers showed no pre-season punch going 0-4 and looking listless. Delhomme, a mediocre QB is in the last year of his contract and the Panthers have no one waiting in the wings. I dont see Carolina doing better than an 8-8 record and missing the playoffs.

Last week, the NC State Wolfpack lost to the South Carolina Gamecocks on Thursday night… It was an ugly 7-3 game. It showed NC State has a good defense, but their offense is mistake prone. I dont think it was an overly positive game for the SC either, but a win is a win – and they are very important, especially in week 1.

In other games, Wake Forest lost a home game to Baylor. Duke lost to Richmond (A lower division school) – a sure embarassment, especially with the loss at home. East Carolina took out Appalachian State. App St., a NC based team, is a perennial contender for the Div 1-FCS championship (the division under the FBS, or bowl eligible teams). North Carolina took apart the Citadel and is the only AP ranked football team at #19.

Stanford at Wake Forest (-3) – 12:00pm
East Carolina at West Virginia (-6.5) – 3:30pm
NC State plays host to Murray State – 6pm
