A Carolina Pick-Me-Up

Last fall, things were not looking good for North Carolina sports.  The local football teams had subpar seasons, The Carolina Hurricanes had an awful start to the season and even college basketball appeared to be down when the ACC lost the Big 10 challenge.  The Charlotte Bobcats seemed to be the best hope – but had never had a winning season – let alone playoffs.  But the new year brought some welcome surprises.

We must start off with the biggest surprise – On Monday, Duke won the NCAA championship.  The win keeps the best of college basketball on the tobacco road. North Carolina, last years champ, is a mere 10 minute drive from Duke.  Even I had counted out the Blue Devils heading into the tournament – but a friendly bracket, some luck playing a beat up WV team in the semis, and peaking at the right time proved a winning combination.  The final game against Butler in Indianapolis should be an instant classic.

In the second half of the NHL season, the Hurricanes caught fire and made the season respectable.  They will still miss out on a playoff appearance, but have momentum and hope heading into the offseason.  Even with the cost cutting, the Canes had something special which hopefully will extend into next season.  Let’s hope the team comes back healthy and management makes a few offseason moves to add some offense.

The Charlotte Bobcats are on the verge of their first playoff appearance.  They should clinch by this weekend if all goes well.  While they arent in the same league as the Cavs yet we must take baby steps.  Playoffs this year – maybe even a series win.  We can keep on improving – success can be contagious.

North Carolina sports fans are patient – and this year it has paid off in spades!  Again, congrats to the Dookies and best of luck to the Bobcats in the playoffs!
